Plasse’s Resort is at the southwest end of Silver Lake located off of Highway 88, 9 miles from Kirkwood Resort.
Plasse’s was opened up in 1853, first as a trading post, by Ramon Pierre Plasse as a stopover for people hauling goods along the Carson Immigrant Trail. Ramon married Louise Retrou in 1862 and over time and 5 children later, Plasse’s Resort evolved into a destination and stopover that included a hotel, general store, meat market and later a post office. Next to the general store is what remains of the original cabin. While things have changed over the years, on the property now you will find a general store, laundry rooms, bathrooms, a bar/restaurant and chapel.
The resort boasts spaces for tents, groups, large RV’s and even equestrians. There are several loops going through the campground so it is important to find the loop you are on to find your space. The loop farther in behind the general store is mostly for seasonal guests, of which many have been there for multiple years. The spaces just to the left of the general store accommodate larger RV’s or trailers as do the spaces along the meadow as you drive in. If you go up onto the loop to the left it will split into two sections where one is for tents and one is for RV’s and tents. Hook ups only include water. If you are there for a longer period of time you can pay an extra fee for them to come and empty your tanks but otherwise just plan for only the water hook up at your site.
The area is heavily wooded and if you book early you can find a very nice place to camp. You’ll have neighbors right near you but after having stayed in a couple of different locations I found that I didn’t feel crammed into a space. In one of the spaces we have stayed in we had a neighbor on one side and a creek on the other with nice views. I recommend spending some time studying the campground map to pick a good spot.
Kids had the run of the place. And I mean that in a good way. I’ve seen a lot of kids at Plasse’s playing, on bikes, swimming, fishing and just having fun. I think that it offers a good balance of having that real camping feeling but with people around and stuff going on yet not a manicured “resort”. At any time you could have someone drive by in a side X side or dirt bike but also be watching for the kids.
If you want a KOA with perfectly paved roads, a sparkling clear pool and mood lighting that comes on as the sun goes down then this is not the place for you. Plasse’s is way more rustic than any of that. I think it’s really more a blend of National Forest campground and resort with some amenities. The restaurant has some decent food and it’s fun to go get something after a couple nights of cooking on the grill. And the bar does have a walk up window to order at which is always fun. 4th of July weekend can get a bit loud there but all in good fun!
Recreation abounds at Plasse’s. If you are an equestrian you can reserve a space for you and your horses and ride right out of camp. If you have a Jeep, side X side, ATV or motorcycle you can jump right out onto the trails very near the resort. I recommend the On X app to show you what’s there. I’ll be adding in some of my own suggestions later along with GPX files. If you want to fish you can walk right over to the lake and do that or explore some of the other nearby lakes. With all of the water around swimming is easy to find as well.
Plasse’s is a laid back family resort with lots to do and fun for everyone that really makes you feel like you’re getting away from it all.
